A Campus Open to Experimentation

Welcome to the Living Lab of the University of Western Macedonia

About SMART Living Lab

SMART Living Lab is located at the students dormitories at the branch of the University of Western Macedonia at Koila close to Kozani city. The target is to create a “user-friendly” environment for testing industry products and research purposes. SMART Living Lab includes, among others:

An expansive installation:

SMART Living Lab has a total structured area of 4212 m², and a ceiling/floor surface area of 2430 m². In the largest part of the building there are two floors, and the surface of the openings is 800 m².
The facility comprises 190 single rooms, three offices for university staff, nine storage rooms, nine attics, three laundry rooms, and a specialized control room tailored for the Living Lab’s unique purposes.

A plethora of equipment:

A cutting-edge rooftop PV system, with a battery storage system, and an EV charging station, form the foundation of a versatile operational ecosystem. Enhanced with advanced sensors, including thermometers, humidity meters, power quality analyzers, thermal energy meters, a weather station, and over 200 smart plugs, this comprehensive setup offers a dynamic platform for groundbreaking research across multiple domains. From exploring renewable energy sources, PV technologies, and storage systems to delving into demand-side management techniques, smart metering infrastructure, forecasting tools, and inverter control, this multi-purpose ecosystem empowers research in various cutting-edge fields.

Dedicated servers and a meticulously custom-developed DAQ and SCADA platform for:

Collecting all measurement data.
Downloading requested datasets.
Visualizing measurements for easy analysis.
Monitoring the integrity of collected data.
Providing e-mail notifications on the system’s collection status.
Sending e-mail notifications in case of measurement device disconnection.

A 150 kVA Power & Energy Systems Laboratory:

With Custom Power Electronics, Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system, Batteries, 30 kVA Grid Simulator, 10 kW PV Simulator, 6 kW Programmable loads, 540 A DC Power Supply, DAQ and more.
